Michael Bugary is a former Division-I and professional athlete, recovering addict and brain cancer survivor.

During his second professional season playing for the Boston Red Sox organization, Michael suffered a career ending arm injury. Unable to cope with his new reality, he turned to opiates and other substances as a solution for his depression. While battling his addiction, Michael was diagnosed with a large brain tumor.

As a motivational speaker Michael shares his experience, strength and hope. He shares his struggles with identity, addiction and the side effects of his brain cancer treatment.

Taking personal responsibility, learning to manage his pain and by helping others, Michael has been able to find gratitude. He has found purpose and meaning in his suffering, giving him a new appreciation for life.

Michael’s story is a cautionary tale of how selfish choices in the pursuit of validation led to a life of self-destructive behavior. It is also one of redemption, hope and change. It is Michael’s story of how he learned to find comfort in the flawed human being that he is.

In his journey of self-discovery, Michael has learned that he suffers from a terminal disease that is harder to overcome than anything he’s experienced. That disease is, “The Disease of Me.”
